Not a lot brings a broad grin to my face more than when I’m asked to photograph at a child’s party.
As I get there early, take in all the colour and the frazzled mums (mostly!) especially if it a party in their garden. There is usually food enough to feed 2 starving armies and enough sweets to power some exotic missile.
Everything is carefully colour coordinated, chairs and tables lined up to perfection (cue the party planner) and an abundance of colourful balloons to excite even the grumpiest child.
I think I’m the only person who arrives to take this all in (feeling so nostalgic, longing after the ghosts of birthdays past) and then mayhem! The kids descend on the party and then you wonder what happened to all the carefully laid plans.
I love love love the delight on the faces of the children as they spy the sweets, click; piñata, click; sodas and juice, click; popcorn, click; cotton candy, click; slides, click click; pool, click click click! Aaah, the expressions, the joy, longing on all those un-posed faces is a gold mine.
I can’t help but smile whilst I roll on the floor at impossible angles trying to pack it all into one click. Oh, the joy of being a kid again.
So the next time you go to a child’s party, take a minute to look at the faces of these innocents, transport yourselves back to xyz number of years ago and smile 🙂
